Curves, Cushions, and Craftsmanship: A Bay Window Project

Our client wanted an elegant, channel-stitched cushion for his master bedroom’s bay window. It was a substantial piece, stretching 3.1 meters on one side and 3.4 meters on the other. He also opted for high-performance upholstery, knowing that a fixed fabric finish was necessary to achieve the structured channel stitching detail. Since the covers couldn’t be removed for cleaning, durability and spot-cleaning ability became important features.Incorporating the Round PillarOriginally, the plan was to stop the cushion before the round pillar. A clean break, simple execution. However, we strongly recommended extending the cushion around the pillar to give the bay window a more intentional and cohesive look. The client agreed, recognising that the channel stitching would accentuate the curve beautifully.Precision in Planning and ExecutionWith an L-shaped cushion of this scale, delivering it in a single piece wasn’t an option. The initial plan was to split it into three sections, but after consulting with our experienced craftsman, we decided on four. This adjustment allowed for easier assembly, particularly around the round pillar.Template for bay windowAs with any construction, measurements couldn’t be taken at face value. What appeared to be a geometrically perfect circle rarely is, so we created a custom template for the curved section. On site revisions were required for the cushion around the round pillarEven with careful planning, the first attempt didn’t fit as expected. The cushion around the pillar was slightly too large, requiring an on-site revision.Notch details that we also took note ofFinal Adjustments and ResultsAfter making the necessary tweaks, the channel stitching aligned well, and the curved section hugged the pillar as intended. The bay window looked more polished, and the extended cushion gave the space a more deliberate and cohesive feel.
