When interior design firm, Myn Myn Studio shared their vision for a banquette for their client, the concept was already well-formed. The SketchUp drawing they provided was clear, complete with dimensions and specifications. All they needed from us was advice on upholstery and the craftsmanship to bring it to life.
Our journey began with a site visit. Measuring the space was standard procedure, but it’s the small details that make a big difference. We spotted a hidden challenge—a power outlet right where the banquette would sit. Without intervention, it would be rendered useless.
Our solution was to reposition the outlet by extending the wiring to the banquette’s side, ensuring functionality without compromising design.
Fabric was the client’s preference, but in a bustling bar like Slippery Slope, not just any fabric would do. It needed to withstand spills, rowdy nights, and heavy use. While contract-grade velvet and high-performance fabrics were strong contenders, we ultimately chose an outdoor fabric with an indoor feel for its durability and resistance to stains.
Colors were another thoughtful decision: whites and neutrals would show stains too easily, and black would reveal watermarks. The final palette—a warm maroon seat paired with a burnt orange back—felt rich, bold, and just right for the space.
Originally, the back cushions were designed with a curved slope, a playful nod to the bar’s name. But comfort took precedence.
After some discussion, we opted for a regular back with an ergonomic pitch that invited guests to settle in for the evening. The seats, padded to a luxurious 10cm, added to the comfort.
To make the most of the banquette’s footprint, we incorporated four soft-close drawers—an essential storage solution for the bar’s bustling operations.
As we reflect on this project, one thing stands out: the importance of simplicity in assembly. Wall mounting was time-consuming, and in the future, we’d like to explore ways to make it faster and more foolproof. Each project teaches us something new, and Slippery Slope was no exception.
