A Living Room in Bloom: Sculptural Sofas and Jewel Tone Hues

Neutral tones often reign supreme in Singapore homes. But not for our client who dared to inject autumnal boldness into her living room.

This recent project saw us custom making a set of two island sofas, each with an organic, irregular shape that felt more like a conversation than a static piece of furniture. The goal? To bring the warmth and brilliance of a jewel-toned yellow into the heart of her home, framed by the view of trees just outside her window.

Originally drawn to a more muted yellow from our Guideshop, the client pivoted toward a brighter, more saturated hue—one that worked in harmony with the natural landscape beyond her walls.

In a space large enough to handle this daring shade, the sofas become two sculptural accents that don’t overpower but rather anchor the room in warmth. This is not typical for yellow, a color that can easily dominate or overwhelm. But in this instance, color theory was on our side. In such a spacious environment, the jewel tone acts as a counterbalance, adding vibrancy without taking over, allowing the room to breathe while still commanding attention.

Made to measure for our client's living room

Each sofa features moveable, weighted backrests that can be adjusted to any depth, ensuring comfort no matter where the client—or her guests—chooses to sit.

The tactile experience of this piece goes beyond comfort. By day, the lustrous fabric upholstery takes on a sunny disposition, reflective of the daylight streaming in. By night, it deepens, transforming into something more enigmatic, almost like the sofas themselves have different personalities depending on the time of day.

Two different looks from day to night

One challenge during production was the inevitable stitching join for one of the larger sofas due to fabric width limitations.

Weighing priorities: to stitch or not to stitch

While a smaller, seamless version was considered, we opted for Option 1 with a strategic join line. (The join line will be situated where the weighted backrest will lie most of the time) In the end, the bigger size suited the proportions of the client’s living room far better—proof that sometimes, the right decision isn’t the easiest one.

As a final touch, throw cushions were selected after the sofas were completed and positioned, allowing for a more informed choice.

We ultimately landed on a viscose velvet from Designers Guild, a fabric with a kaleidoscopic, reflective pattern that added texture and complexity without competing with the sofa’s bold colour.

The result is a living room that embodies autumn’s most radiant hues, balancing bold design with the changing light of the day—a space that feels as alive as the trees outside.
