When Priscilla Tan of Styled by PT approached us to build a platform bed that would take up 80% of a room, our first thought was, ok... tell us more?
But add to that, the request for full upholstery in white fabric, and we were officially intrigued... and mildly alarmed. But hey, who doesn’t love a good design challenge?
Platform beds with storage are pretty common in Singapore, where every square inch counts.
This one, though, went a step further. The entire structure, measuring 2.8 meters wide and 3.1 meters long, it practically swallowed the room.
The bed was designed to sit flush against a bay window, raising the floor to the bay window’s height to make the annoying structure “disappear.”
Underneath? Open storage space. Smart, right?
For us, the pièce de résistance is a small three-step upholstered staircase leading up to the platform. Functional and fancy. We swooned hard over it.
Construction was smooth, thanks to its minimalistic design. Assembly, however, was a different story. Upholstered furniture doesn’t slide neatly into place—it bulges, folds, and fights back.
Combine that with uneven flooring and walls, and what should’ve been a quick two-hour job turned into an all-day sweat session.
Speaking of sweat, assembling a pristine white bed without air conditioning in humid Singapore was a special kind of challenge. Frequent hand-washing, feet cleaning and spot cleaning to keep the fabric pristine added to the drama. At one point, it felt like an obstacle course designed by a particularly fussy perfectionist.
In the end, all the effort was worth it. The bed is the focal point of the room, blending into the white walls while still commanding attention. Upholstered furniture isn’t typical for bedrooms, and its bold simplicity feels daring and luxurious.
